TUAC sends letter of protest about the arrest of Lee Suk-haeng, President of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU)
The Korean trade union leader has been arrested and charged with “obstruction of business” in connection with his role in organising a strike in July 2008.

Meeting at its 121st Plenary Session on the 12th December 2008,
TUAC affiliates were informed of the situation in Korea, where Lee
Suk-haeng, President of TUAC affiliated organisation the KCTU, had
been arrested on 5 December, for “obstruction of business” (Section
314 of the Penal Code) in connection with his role in organising a
strike on 2 July 2008 and a solidarity action in support of the
E-land Retail Precarious Workers’ strike in 2007. TUAC has also
been informed that arrest warrants were issued against other
leaders of the KCTU, some of whom have been imprisoned. The TUAC
plenary, chaired by John Sweeney , President of the TUAC & the
AFL-CIO, agreed to send the attached letter of protest to
the President of the Republic of Korea.
