The new issue of OECD indicators on education, Education at a Glance 2009, provides a rich and comparable set of indicators measuring the current state of education internationally. As its publication occurs at a time of a severe economic crisis, it is unfortunate that the data do not allow an assessment of the impact of the crisis on public and private spending on education and on education systems as a whole. The data presented do not extend beyond 2007. Nevertheless, they provide a rich and helpful source of information facilitating the assessment of education policies pursued by the governments of OECD countries, as well as of a large number of partner countries. Moreover, they reveal that the rhetoric of education policy debates is not followed by policy action and implementation.
