Commenting on the publication of the OECD’s Education at a Glance 2010, TUAC General Secretary John Evans said “the OECD presents compelling evidence on the long term economic and social benefits of educational expenditure. It would be a tragic mistake for OECD governments to reduce their investment in this crucial sector in the wake of the crisis”.

The OECD indicators on education also highlight issues of both equity and quality. Equity in education is critical in fostering social cohesion and facilitating transition from school to work. Of particular importance are policies improving access to vocational education and training, which is critical for migrants, youth, and unemployed workers’. Moreover, policies must at the same time maintain and improve quality education delivered by qualified teachers.
