TUAC condemns Korean Government Crackdown on Unions

23/11/2015

The ITUC and many TUAC affiliates have condemned the Korean government’s latest crackdown against trade unions, following a series of raids on union offices and the creation of a special task force to arrest KCTU President Han Sang-gyun.

Last Friday, computers, documents and other equipment have been confiscated from the offices of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (an affiliate of the TUAC) and its member unions. The Korean labour movement is currently contesting new labour laws.

TUAC shares concerns about the return to labour repression by the Korean government and in particular calls for the dropping of charges against the KCTU President and the release of all workers detained in the raids. The government’s failure to respect the commitments given at the time of Korea’s accession to the OECD and during the special monitoring process influences the manner, in which TUAC affiliates regard commitments being given on labour rights in the current accession process with Colombia.
